St Albans District Credit Union is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FRN 213794)
The Junior Savers’ section of the Credit Union allows members under the age of 16 to open accounts. Accounts may be operated for very young children by parents or guardians. Opening hours by agreement with each school during term time.
With help and support from the Government’s Local Network Fund, the Catholic Children’s Society, individual schools and Credit Union volunteers, a Junior Savers Club known as “Treasure Chest” was established in early 2004 and school banks now operate in five primary schools in St Albans. They are Mandeville, St. Bernadette’s, Maple and Camp Junior Mixed Infants Schools and Wheatfields Junior School.
The “in-school” Treasure Chest banks were welcomed and encouraged by the head teachers . The banks are operated during term time by Credit Union volunteers, volunteers from the schools, and some senior pupils. Since the first school bank was opened on 29 March 2004 almost 250 junior savers have joined the Credit Union.
In October 2006 a play on the theme of saving was performed in each school by professional actors, and follow-up workshops were then held. More children joined as a result.
The children receive small prizes for achieving various milestones and then move on to receive certificates for regular saving.
